Thakoon For Target

thakoon for targetTHE FRUGAL FASHIONISTA: THAKOON FOR TARGET

He has dressed Michelle Obama, and his designs have been worn by fashionistas  and celebrities  such as Keira Knightley and Sarah Jessica Parker on the red carpet. So, if you haven't heard of Thakoon Panichgul, then you need to get out from under that rock.

Thakoon was born in Northern Thailand and moved to Nebraska in his teens. Originally into photography, he discovered an eye for styling and designing.  After a brief stint as an editor in Harper's Bazaar, he enrolled at Parsons School of Design in NYC. He won a nomination for the 2006 CFDA awards and that was only the beginning.

Known for his sexy, ultrafeminine dresses and whimsical prints, the designer, to the delight of this Frugal Fashionista, was chosen by Target to design for their line, GO International.

Embodying his signature style, the young designer opted for Shibori prints (a type of Japanese tie-dye technique), bright floral patterns, and even a plum camo-inspired color scheme.

I am a fan of the Thousand Flowers Cotton Canvas Coat in plum ($44.99)

as well as the Shibori Woven Dress ($39.99)

the Shibori Print Cardigan ($32.99)

and the Tie Front Multicolor A-line skirt  ($29.99)

I tried on most of the pieces in the collection and I have to regretfully admit that the fit is not as perfect as I would like for some of the pieces. The Colorblock Shift Dress ($39.99) was a little on the dowdy side and the Multicolored Cyber Floral Dress  ($39.99) was more of a muumuu than a sexy and playful summer dress.

For the most part, the pieces in the collection are good buys and can be used as layering pieces this season or as single pieces in the spring.  The swimsuits are gorgeous and eye catching, with Shibori prints and Cyber Floral patterns. Swimsuits separates start at $16.99.

So if you're looking to shop early for Spring 2009, now is the time to do it. HURRY!  You only have until Jan 31st to get these limited edition pieces!
