A New Champion is Born

nadalAfter almost five grueling hours, Rafael Nadal wins his first Wimbledon Championship on Sunday, denying the first seed Swiss national the honor to be the first man to win six Wimbledon titles in a row since the 19th century. The marathon breaks Wimbledon records as the longest match in the championship history.

Nadal, 22, of Spain, beats defending champion Roger Federer in a record-breaking, nerve-wracking five set match, becoming the first Spaniard in over three decades to win the championship. The laborious and protracted match was interrupted by a rain delay of over an hour at the end of the ninth game.

His 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5/7), 6-7 (8/10), 9-7 victory did not come easily. The first two sets were clearly Nadal's; producing an almost perfect performance. Not to be outdone, Federer stepped up his game and won the next two sets. The Swiss superstar finished the third set with an ace, showing tennis fans all over why he is the defending champion.

This victory made the 22 year old Spaniard only the third man to win the French Open and Wimbledon back to back in the same season, hereby ending the top seed's six year, 65-match winning streak on the grass courts. The deal was sealed when the Federer netted a backhand on the fourth match of the last set.
